Smoke detectors should be a common sight in any home. It is proven that smoke detectors save lives.
For minimal protection, a smoke detector should be located outside bedrooms (or any sleeping area) and also on each remaining floor of your home. The detector should be located on the ceiling or 6-12 inches below the ceiling on a wall for optimum detection of smoke.
SMOKE DETECTORS MORE THAN 10 YEARS OLD SHOULD BE REPLACED IMMEDIATELY
Smoke detectors must be properly maintained to ensure that they work in the case of a fire. The two things to do are to test your detector every month and change the batteries in your detector every 6 months. When testing your detector, follow the manufacturer's directions. (This should involve a test button somewhere on your detector and NOT an actual fire or flame.) While testing your detector you should make sure there is no dust or cobwebs around or near your detector.
Remember, it is your responsibility to make sure that smoke detectors work properly in your home. A properly working smoke detector is the first step in saving lives in the case of a fire.
